The Pfungstädter Brauerei Hildebrand GmbH & Co. KG is a brewery in southern Hesse on the edge of the Odenwald with over 180 years of tradition.

history

In 1831 the founder Justus Hildebrand brewed his beer in Hahn , a neighboring community or the current part of the city where it is today. The brewery was then called Zum Hirsch and was built in the Zum Hirschen inn in today's Gernsheimer Straße 82. While the brewery's annual output was initially only 200 hectoliters, it became so successful in the next few years that the business was relocated to Pfungstadt in 1846 . With the move, the brewery changed its character from the image of a deer to a horseshoe from the Pfungstadt city arms.

In 1855 Justus Ulrich began training in the brewery, who later became the brewery's managing director and son-in-law of the brewery founder. The output could be increased continuously, by 1861 to 3296 and by 1867 to 13,000 hectoliters. In 1868 an own malt house was built on the brewery premises. The Pfungstädter brewery delivered to numerous countries and achieved international successes and awards; Medals that beer won in Paris, Haguenau / Alsace, Vienna and Philadelphia until 1881 were shown on the bottle label for a long time. The brewery's economic success boosted the prosperity of the entire region.

Due to the two world wars and the associated trade restrictions, the sales market declined. In 1945 the brewery was occupied by the Allies and they helped rebuild it. In 1955 the company was fundamentally modernized and the output reached 150,000 hectoliters for the first time. On this basis, Pfungstädter developed into one of the largest private breweries in Hesse, which in 2004 was able to achieve the largest beer output in history with 473,000 hectoliters.

The Schönberger brewery from Groß-Bieberau was taken over by the people of Pfungstadt and their beer is now also produced in Pfungstadt. In addition, the Pfungstädter brewery brews the beer of the Köthener brand , a former brewery from Saxony-Anhalt. In addition, the Pfungstädter brewery owned the brewery driver GmbH in Ludwigshafen-Oggersheim until it was deleted from the commercial register in 2010. The driver beer is still brewed by Pfungstädter and has been actively marketed again since 2015. The Michelstädter Bier brewery was taken over in 2016.

There are two brewery taverns: The first was opened in 1880 when Justus Hildebrand acquired the Sitte restaurant in Darmstadt, which is still run under this name today. The Pfungstädter Brauereigasthof is the second brewery bar, it is located right next to the brewery site in Pfungstadt.
