history

Shortly after 1185 a duke Villicus founded farms. From this time only the church , today in the baroque style, has been preserved. The first written documents about a royal villicus date back to 1264. There is evidence of a burgrave at the newly built Bezděz Castle in 1278 .

In the same year, the village below the castle was raised to the status of a city by King Wenceslaus II . The lords of the castle tried to upgrade the place by building a square town center. After 1300, the new lord of the castle, Hynek Berka von Dubá, asked for the town charter to be transferred to the new foundation of Nový Bezděz (now Bělá pod Bezdězem , German Weißwasser ). This stopped the further development of the city. The shortage of water in the town also had a negative effect. In 1898 a large part of the town was destroyed by fire. In 1938 Schloßbösig and the rest of the Sudetenland were annexed to the German Reich . The German-speaking population was expelled after 1945.
