Velenice (German Wellnitz ) is a municipality of the Okres Česká Lípa in the Liberec region in the north of the Czech Republic . It is located in the south of the Lusatian Mountains on the road from Zákupy (Reichstadt) to Cvikov (Zwickau in Bohemia) in the valley of the Svitávka (Zwittebach) river .
history
Velenice was once one of the centers of mirror manufacturing in Bohemia. North of the place in the Zwittetal existed from 1767 on the mirror factory Wellnitz built by Count Josef Max Kinsky. The Rabstein mirror factory was founded in 1854, and its striking production building, located under a large rock overhang, is still preserved today. The glass sand required for mirror production was extracted underground in the immediate vicinity of the mirror factories. The underground mines ("desert church") that were built at that time are all located near the road to Svitava (Zwitte) and are open to the public. In administrative terms, Wellnitz formed a municipality in the judicial district of Haida or in the Bohemian Leipa district from the middle of the 19th century .
Attractions
The baroque church of the Holy Trinity from 1735 is located in the village. To the west of the village are the remains of a medieval castle on the Schloßberg. The most important attraction of the place is the Holy Sepulcher (Boží hrob) , a chapel built in an artificial cave.
