The place was founded in the 12th century by Lord Svojek. The lord of the castle, first mentioned in 1370, was Jan Ješek von Svojkov. The most important compatriot was Jan von Chlum, called Kepka, who accompanied Jan Hus to the church council in Constance.

Attractions
The castle was built by František Adam von Knobloch in the years 1650–1664. From 1750 to 1945 the castle belonged to the Kinsky family. Since 1945 it has been used as a retirement home. It burned down in 1958. In the meantime it has been reconstructed and serves as a hotel.
In the immediate vicinity of about 15 minutes begins long way through the Modlivý dul ( Betgraben ), which leads to a chapel which was hewn out of a sandstone rock in 1836 by sculptor A. Wagner. Before that there was a wooden chapel, to which the first procession from Česká Lípa was carried out in 1772. At the instigation of Countess Kinský, the Modlivý důl rock chapel was transformed into a Lourdes grotto with a statue of the Virgin Mary in 1903 . Today, every May 1st, a pilgrimage fair is held here to mark the opening of the Mariam month.
The church of St. Wenceslas from 1726 is located in the village.
