The Velký Bezděz (German: Bösig ) is a mountain near the same place Bezděz ( Schloßbösig ) far from Doksy ( Hirschberg am See ) in the Liberec Region in the Czech Republic . The Bezděz Castle ( Bösig Castle ), which can be seen from afar, was built on the summit and was built by King Přemysl Ottokar II in 1264 and is still well preserved.
Together with the Malý Bezděz ( Neuberg ), the mountain forms the distinctive double formation of the Bösige . The Bösige with the castle are a landmark of Northern Bohemia due to their striking, landscape-defining appearance . The landscape inspired many artists, especially the romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha . The lake at the foot of the mountain formation was named after him ( Máchovo jezero ).
Because of its primeval beech population and the warmth-loving flora and fauna, the mountain, together with neighboring Malý Bezděz, was placed under state protection as a national nature reserve in 1949.
