The Matice moravská (German: Moravian Matica ) is a traditional scientific association in Moravia . It is based in Brno , is now part of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and is primarily concerned with research on Moravian history.

founding

The founding history of Matice moravská is closely linked to the Czech national movement of the 19th century. It was founded in 1849 as the National Association of Saints Cyril and Methodius by Moravian scholars and writers. The association's original task was to promote the Czech language and literature. The association published books in the national language, supported libraries, set up reading circles and began to put together their own book collection.

With the naming after the Slav apostles Cyril and Methodius , the founders wanted to remember the early medieval Great Moravian Empire , which was evangelized by the two saints. This period was considered to be the heyday of Moravian history in the 19th century. At the same time, the name was given to express the bond with the Orthodox Slavic peoples, among whom Cyril and Methodius were also venerated. As early as 1853, however, the association was renamed Matice moravská . Last but not least, an opening towards non-Catholics was documented, because they could not do much with the veneration of saints.

Since 1869 the association published its own magazine, Časopis Matice moravské . The first editor was Vincenc Brandl .

Since the 1890s, the association has oriented itself towards literary and art history , especially under the influence of František Kameníček . In the 1950s, the association survived the wave of dissolution of many academic and cultural circles by the communist party . However, in 1967 the society had to submit to the Czechoslovak Historical Society. In 1990 Matice Moravská became independent again. In 1994 she joined the newly formed Historical Club at the Academy of Sciences .

A new editorial board, headed by Prof. Jan Janák , has been set up and includes a number of important researchers, including Josef Válka , Milan Myška , Jiří Kroupa , Jiří Malíř , Zdeněk Beneš and others. Important historians have also worked for the association before. Between the world wars, it was Bohumil Navrátil and Stanislav Souček , with whose editorial assistance the Matice magazine gained a high quality reputation.

Today around 200 specialists from the field of history and related sciences work in Matice Moravská, whose task is to research Moravian history in connection with the history of the Czech Republic and Central Europe.
