Bohumil Navrátil (born February 21, 1870 in Vyškov , Austria-Hungary ; † July 2, 1936 in Brno -Řečkovice) was a Czech historian, archivist, history professor and from 1926 to 1927 rector of the Masaryk University in Brno.

Life

From 1881 he attended the Slavic grammar school in Brno, passed his Abitur on June 11, 1889 in Prague, then studied law and from 1892 philosophy at the faculty in Prague. On July 17, 1896 he received his doctorate in philosophy. Until 1900 he worked as a clerk in the library of the University of Prague and from 1902 to 1908 at the university library in Brno. He also studied abroad for some time, including 1896–1897 in Berlin and Bonn. From 1908 to 1920 he held the position of regional archivist and from 1919 to 1935 that of the administrator of the Brno City Archives. From 1920 to 1936 he taught as a full professor for the history of the Middle Ages at the University of Brno. In 1922 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Padua . A year before that he was elected first dean of Masaryk University, 1926–1927 he was its rector.

Navratil belonged to the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences, the Czech Academy of Sciences , was a member of the Commission for the Publication of Historical Memoranda of Matice Moravská , and later its chairman.

Works

In his books he dealt with the history of the Counter Reformation in Moravia . From 1914 he edited the Matice magazine.
