Viktorin Kornel ze Všehrd

Viktorin Kornel ze Všehrd (also Victorinus Cornelius ) (* 1460 in Chrudim , † September 21, 1520 in Prague ) was a Czech writer, lawyer, master of the university and dean of the Prague University .

Life

He comes from a middle-class family. In 1483 he passed the examination to become a master of liberal arts at Charles University and then began lecturing. In 1484 he was appointed dean of the university, but in 1487 he left the university and from 1493 to 1497 accepted a position as clerk of the land table at the regional court. In 1492 he was admitted to the Bohemian nobility with the title of Všehrd . Kornel died of the plague in Prague . He is buried on the pale in the Church of St. John the Baptist .

person

He was friends with Bohuslaus Lobkowicz von Hassenstein . However, the friendship ended with different views on matters of faith. He was a proponent of the Brothers Unity , wrote first in Latin and after a certain time, when he realized that his works were not understood, began to write in the Czech language .

He first came into contact with the idea of humanism through his encounter with Řehoř Pražský , one of the pioneers of the new direction at the conservative university. After leaving the university, he deepened his legal knowledge through further autodidactic studies.

His greatest merit, however, is the writing of the country table, the originals of which fell victim to a fire in Prague's Lesser Town in 1541 .

Works

At the regional court he got access to numerous documents, which he then used for his most important book O práviech, súdiech i dskách země České knihy devatery . The writing of this book was fateful for him. After the Bohemian nobility had established that Kornel wanted to publish some passages from the country table, which they tried to delete, they applied to King Vladislav II to remove him from office. In 1497 he was removed from office, but had enough material to make the book accessible to the public.

In his book Přípise knězi Jírovi , he took the view that the task of Hussism is not to imitate the Latin script, but to create an independent language of faith of the people. This statement gave further impetus to humanism in Bohemia.

He became the founder and theoretician of Bohemian humanistic translation works. His conception of law was also humanistic. He considered usefulness and honesty, derived from the works of Cicero, to be indispensable as the principle of morality and law . He takes the side of those disadvantaged by society and protects their interests. As a representative of the Utraquists , he was convinced that Czech history culminated in Hussism.

He also translated works by church writers and ancient writings.
