Jan Svatopluk Presl (born October 4, 1791 in Prague ; † April 6, 1849 there ) was a Bohemian , k. k. Austrian professor of zoology and mineralogy and one of the most important natural scientists of the 19th century. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " J.Presl ".

Life

Presl studied at the Piarist Gymnasium in Prague , later medicine. However, he never opened a practice, but became an assistant in zoology and mineralogy. In 1818 he worked in Olomouc for two years , then returned to Prague and lectured at Charles University in Prague for another 28 years .

He was a co-founder of the Czech technical terminology in many scientific fields, especially mineralogy, chemistry, zoology and botany. He introduced double words for the designation of inorganic compounds and differentiated the oxidation number with the help of suffixes. However, not all of his terminology could be used. His works were later supplemented or revised by Vojtěch Šafařík , Alexandr Sommer-Batěk (1874–1944) and Emil Votoček .

Presl was also an avid patriot. He belonged to the group of the Czech National Revival led by Josef Jungmann and planned the establishment of the National Museum with these supporters of the Fatherland . In 1821 he co-founded the first scientific journal Krok , published in the Czech Republic . In 1848 he was one of the delegates of the Slavic Assembly.

Honors

Him and his brother Karel Bořivoj Presl (1794-1852) in honor of the genera were Preslia Opiz the plant family of the mint (Lamiaceae) and Preslianthus Iltis & Cornejo from the family of capparaceae named (Capparaceae).

The magazine Preslia , which has been published since 1914, is also named after them.
