Vojtěch Šafařík

Vojtěch Šafařík (officially: Šafárik ; also Adalbert Šafařík ; * October 26, 1829 , † July 2, 1902 ) was a Czech chemist of Slovak origin; he wrote his works in German and Czech.

Life

Pavel Jozef Šafárik's son studied chemistry in Prague, Berlin and Göttingen. He was one of the students of Friedrich Wöhler and Justus von Liebig , with whom he also worked. In 1869 he was appointed professor of chemistry at the Czech Polytechnic, and in 1882 the first professor of chemistry at Charles University in Prague . From 1872 he wrote as an editor for the first Czech chemical journal Zprávy Spolku chemiků českých .

Towards the end of his life he devoted himself exclusively to astronomy.

In Göttingen he was involved in the research of diethyl magnesium , worked on the chemical composition of platinum catalysis , vanadium , and organmetallic compounds ( Grignard compounds ). At the Vienna Academy he published a paper on the physical properties of substances.

From 1859 he took part in the chemical analysis of the authenticity of the Grünberger manuscript and came to the conclusion that it was a forgery.

In addition to chemistry, he dealt with mineralogy .

In 1860 Safarik published the first university textbook Základové chemie čili lučby and participated in chemical terminology in the Czech language . He improved the nomenclature of the chemists Jan Svatopluk Presl and Josef Jungmann .
