The Piseker Gate ( Dolní brána in Czech ) in Prachatice (German Prachatitz ), a town in the Jihočeský kraj (South Bohemia) region in the Czech Republic , was built around 1527. The city gate has been a protected cultural monument as part of the city fortifications since 1988 .

history

The city of Prachatice had been fortified by a city wall since the 14th century, and the interior of the city was only accessible through one of two gates. Of the two city gates, the lower one, known as the Piseker Gate, has been preserved.

description

Access to the church and the large market square is still possible today through the renaissance gate. The city gate is divided into an outer and an inner gate.

The older, inner gate is covered with a gable roof. The remains of wall drawings from the 15th and 16th centuries can be seen on the ceiling of its arched entrance gate.

The outer gate was built from the late 15th to the half of the 16th century. It is part of a massive, plastered tower on a rectangular floor plan. The side of the field is adorned with a mural depicting Wilhelm von Rosenberg (1535–1592), Oberstlandesämmerer and Supreme Burgrave of Bohemia , on horseback.

The defensive strength of the Piseker Tor was increased by a barbican , a large round tower porch. The entrance to the barbican was on the side of the gate axis, so that one approached the gate in a curve. Similar barbicanes are preserved in Kadaň and Cracow .
