The barbican in Krakow is considered to be the largest preserved barbican in Europe. This defensive structure in front of the Florianstor , in front of the city wall, was built from brick in 1498/99 under the government of Johann I. Albrecht .

description

The circular Gothic building has an inner diameter of 24.40 meters, the wall thickness is over three meters. The building was previously connected to Florianstor by a wide corridor. The roof is broken through by seven octagonal or round turrets with pointed roofs. There are 130 loopholes and openings in the floor for pouring boiling water on the besiegers in the surrounding archery passage. The building was surrounded by a moat filled with water.

The Barbican is currently part of the Krakow City History Museum. It is also known colloquially as the "Rondell".

In 1910 the caravan of Michał Drzymała (1857–1937), who had achieved fame as a symbol of resistance against Prussian arbitrariness, was exhibited in the Barbican .
