The Church of St. James ( Kostel svatého Jakuba ) in Prachatice (German Prachatitz ) in the south-west of the Czech Republic is a late Gothic church that has been a protected cultural monument since October 1, 1981.

history

With the development of the town of Prachatice through the salt trade on the Goldener Steig , a church was built. The oldest evidence of the church is from 1359. The choir was built in the last quarter of the 14th century. The Hussite Wars interrupted construction activities. In 1420 the Hussites allegedly burned 85 Prachatic citizens alive in the northern sacristy. The nave was completed at the end of the 15th century. The church received its final appearance from the restorations after the great fire of 1507. Restorations took place in 1832, 1844, 1902, 1936, 1991 and 2009/2010.

In 1811, St. Johann Nepomuk Neumann was baptized in St. Jakob . The chapel in which the baptismal font is located has been named after him since 1993.

building

The three-aisled church with a pentagonal choir has two towers. The inside is covered with a mesh vault. There are extensive remains of Gothic wall paintings and rich baroque furnishings.
