Christian von Prachatitz
Christian von Prachatitz (Czech Křišťan z Prachatic ; Latin Christianus de Prachaticz ; * around 1368 in Prachatice ; † September 4, 1439 in Prague ) was a Bohemian priest , mathematician , astronomer , theologian , doctor and university teacher . He taught at the Charles University in Prague , where he held the post of rector in 1405, 1412/13, 1434 and 1437 and from 1437 to 1439 the administrator of the utraquist church.
Life
Christian von Prachatitz studied from 1386 at Charles University in Prague. There he acquired the academic title of Baccalaurius in 1388 and two years later the master's degree Magister Artium . He then taught at the university, where Jan Hus was one of his students. In 1403 he became dean of the artist faculty and in 1405 rector of the university. It is not known when he was ordained a priest. In 1405 he was appointed pastor of St. Michael's Church in Prague's Old Town . Together with Johannes Cardinalis von Bergreichenstein he took part in the Council of Pisa in 1409 . Christian von Prachatitz studied medicine with Siegmund Albich . In 1413 he was appointed by King Wenceslaus to head a commission that was supposed to deal with the preaching ban imposed on Jan Hus and his return to Prague. In 1415 he stood up for Jan Hus at the Council of Constance . After returning to Prague from 1417 he was again Dean of the Philosophical Faculty. In 1427 he had to flee from the Hussites . In 1429 he returned and in 1434 he was again elected rector. From 1437 to 1439 he held the office of administrator of the utraquist church.
Works
Christian von Prachatitz wrote numerous works, especially in the fields of mathematics, astronomy and medicine. Some of his manuscripts are in the Bavarian State Library and in the State and University Library in Königsberg .

Appreciation
Christian von Prachatitz is one of the 72 famous people whose names were placed on the facade of the National Museum in Prague in 2008 . These personalities were also portrayed in the series Dvaasedmdesát jmen české historie ( 72 names in Czech history ) by the Czech public television company .
