Xavier Mathiot (born November 12, 1944 ) is a former French racing driver .
Career
Xavier Mathiot started as an amateur racing driver in 1967 in the Trophée d'Auvergne and finished 23rd in the overall standings on a BMW 2000 . After several other local GT and sports car races in France, he became a professional racing driver in 1969 and was the first works driver for Gérard Welter and his new racing team, Welter Racing . He contested the first race in the history of this racing team in 1969 at Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours . On the P69 , he finished eighth overall in a race for the French sports car championship.
After two more years at Welter, Mathiot entered monoposto racing in 1972 and competed in Formula Renault for four years . He had his best season in 1974 when he finished eighth in the overall championship on a Martini MK14 . When, after four years in this racing series, promotion to a higher monoposto class no longer seemed possible, he returned to Welter Racing in 1976. In the same year he made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . The trio of Claude Ballot-Léna , Guy Chasseuil and Mathiot stopped a defect in the radiator early. His best overall placement at Le Mans was 13th overall in 1981 . At the end of that year he retired from racing and ended his career.
