Karl Alwin Elling (born April 20, 1897 in Hanover ; † November 7, 1973 there ) was a German film director .

Live and act

Elling studied music in Göttingen from 1920 to 1924 until he received his doctorate . He then made contacts in the film industry and worked as an editor . In addition, he made his directorial debut with a short film in 1932, and from 1935 onwards Elling concentrated exclusively on directing a film. He shot light-weight entertainment without any major demands, comedies and comedies of harmless design, occasionally produced by his younger brother Adolf Elling .

Alwin Elling, who was married to a Jewish woman twelve years older than him, came under pressure from the National Socialist rulers over the years, received hardly any film commissions and after 1938 was able to earn his livelihood almost exclusively by making educational films for the Wehrmacht. Shortly after 1945 he and his Jewish wife Anna went to the USA for some time, where Elling worked as an actor on Walter Wicclair's "Free Stage" in the late 1940s. Back in (the Federal Republic of) Germany, it was difficult for him to make contact with the cinema in the Federal Republic. Eventually Alwin Elling returned to his hometown Hanover.
