Ivica Banović (born August 2, 1980 in Zagreb , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a football coach and former Croatian football player .

Career

NK Zagreb

The Zagreb-born midfielder Banović started at NK Zagreb at the age of six and went through the club's youth departments there. In 1997 he made his first game in the Croatian First Football League . After eleven missions in the first season he signed a professional contract for this club and made another 51 games in the following two seasons, in which he scored nine goals.

Werder Bremen

In the summer of 2000, the midfielder moved from the Croatian capital club NK Zagreb to Werder Bremen . There he played 52 Bundesliga games in four years and scored two goals. In his last season at Werder, Banović was assigned to the amateur squad by Thomas Schaaf , but also played for the professional team. For the amateurs of SV Werder Bremen, he completed five regional league games, in which he scored five goals.

1. FC Nuremberg

In the summer of 2004, the Croatian international moved to 1. FC Nürnberg . Although he was used there regularly, he did not make the final breakthrough as a regular player in three seasons. Therefore his contract, which expired in 2006/07, was not extended by the Nuremberg side. His last competitive game for the Franconians was the 2006/07 DFB Cup final . There he came on in the 115th minute for Javier Pinola .

SC Freiburg and MSV Duisburg

Banović moved to the second division club SC Freiburg for the 2007/08 season and received a contract there until June 30, 2009, which was extended for the 2009/10 season even after the rise of the Freiburg team. During the winter break of the 2010/11 season, Banović was awarded to the second division club MSV Duisburg after he had only made two Bundesliga appearances for Freiburg in the first half of the season. In addition, the MSV secured an option for further obligations.

Energie Cottbus and Hallescher FC

On August 3, 2011, the second division Energie Cottbus committed Banović until June 30, 2014. After Energie was relegated at the end of the 2013/2014 season as bottom of the table, Banovic received no new contract in Cottbus. In June 2014 he signed a contract with third division club Hallescher FC until 2016 .

Career conclusion and trainer activity in Freiburg

In the summer of 2016, Banović moved to the second team of SC Freiburg in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg . After the regional league season 2018/19 , the Croat ended his active career. He then switched to the coaching staff of the Freiburg football school and trained as an assistant coach for the SC U15 team in the 2019/2020 season.

National team

On August 18, 2004 Banović made his debut in the Croatian national team . Two months later he made his second and last appearance for the Croatian national team in a World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria .
