Detlef Lotze

Detlef Lotze (born November 14, 1930 in Halle / Saale ; † September 20, 2018 in Jena ) was a German ancient historian .

Detlef Lotze passed his Abitur in 1949 and then studied Classical Philology and History until 1953 . He passed the faculty examination in 1953 for the subjects Greek and Latin, in 1954 he became a research assistant at the Department of Ancient History at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena (FSU). He was there in December 1956 with the work Μεταξυ ελευθερων και δουλων. Studies on the legal status of unfree rural populations in Greece up to the 4th century BC Chr. , PhD. His reviewers were Friedrich Zucker and Helmut Berve . Lotze then became a senior scientific assistant. The habilitation took place in June 1962 on the subject of Lysander and the Peloponnesian War . From September 1963 he worked as a lecturer in ancient history at the FSU. After the fall of the Wall , Lotze was professor of ancient history at the Friedrich Schiller University from 1990 until his retirement in 1996. From 1991 to 1993 Lotze was also Dean of the Philosophical Faculty. He was a full member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt (1993) and the German Archaeological Institute .

Lotzes research focus was the history of classical Greece , especially in the area of social and constitutional history . Lotze also worked as a translator for ancient Greek historians ( Anabasis of Xenophon ). He was married and the father of two daughters.
