Uwe Hoßfeld (2015)

Uwe Hoßfeld (born August 5, 1966 in Bad Liebenstein ) is a German biology historian , biology didactic and journalist . He is an adjunct professor for didactics of biology at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena .

biography

Uwe Hoßfeld graduated from the advanced secondary school in Sonneberg in 1985 with a high school diploma. From 1985 to 1988 he did military service in the People's Navy . From 1988 to 1994, Hoßfeld studied biology , history of science , sports science , educational science and Indonesian studies at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU). He finally completed a legal clerkship in Weimar and Apolda from 1993 to 1995. After the first state examination in 1993, he graduated in 1994 with a Magister Artium for the history of natural sciences and biology (MA, Philosophical Faculty) and the second state examination in 1995. Hoßfeld was admitted to the FSU in 1996 Jena with the work " Gerhard Heberer (1901-1973) - His Contribution to Biology in the 20th Century" for Dr. rer. nat. PhD. This was followed by a HEP scholarship at the Chair for Ethics in Biosciences in Tübingen ( Eve-Marie Engels ) in 1996 and a scholarship from the Volkswagen Foundation at the Institute for the History of Science in Göttingen ( Nicolaas A. Rupke ) in 1997. From 1998 to 2000, Hoßfeld worked as Research associate in the DFG ( German Research Foundation ) project "Development of Ernst Haeckel's correspondence ", 2000 to 2002 as a research associate at the Institute for the History of Medicine, Natural Science and Technology ( Ernst Haeckel House ) in Jena.

From 2002 to 2006 he was a scientific assistant in the Senate Commission for the "Processing of Jena University History in the 20th Century", in the field of natural sciences and at the Ernst Haeckel House. In 2003 the habilitation for the subject “History of Natural Sciences” followed with a thesis on “Biological anthropology between politics, ideology and science, 1861-1945 with special consideration of the developments at the Jena University”.

Uwe Hoßfeld has been head of the Biology Didactics working group since the 2006/07 winter semester and an adjunct professor for biology didactics at the FSU since 2009. From 2013 to 2015 he headed a “science research laboratory” at the State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics Saint Petersburg (ITMO), from 2016 to 2017 he was a research professor there. Since 2018 he has also been PhD filosofskich nauk (Dr. sc. Phil.) For the history of science and technology at the State University in St. Petersburg .

Research interests

History of science and biology

After a trip to the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia in 1993, which served in particular to compare archival material from Gerhard Heberer's estate and to confirm important results of the so-called " Rensch Expedition" of 1927, Hoßfeld initially dealt with the History and theory of evolutionary biology in the German-speaking area as well as the history of science and universities during National Socialism and the GDR.

Since 2001 he has represented with Thomas Junker and Wolf-Ernst Reif - based on Ernst Mayr u. a. - a "synthetic Darwinism" ( synthetic evolution theory ). This is a theory of evolution that emerged between 1930 and 1950, in which the selection theory was combined with knowledge of genetics (mutation) and systematics (geographical isolation). At the same time, Hoßfeld repeatedly emphasized the importance of "biological anthropology" for evolutionary biology.

Biological- historical falsifications were made on topics such as Nikolai V. Timoféeff-Ressovsky (collaboration under National Socialism?), Ernst Haeckel (Nobel Prize, antipope, family trees), Alfred Russel Wallace (Darwin's shadow man), on alternative evolution theories (e.g. Lysenkoism , creationism ), “Generalized Darwinism” and genetics (rediscovery of Mendel's laws around 1900). Together with Lennart Olsson , Hoßfeld also worked on the history of Nature magazine in the Third Reich.

Current research is currently addressing questions of the international expansion of EvoDevo , palaeoanthropology and evolutionary biology, the history of Russian biology and Ernst Haeckel's life's work. He is one of the main authors of the Jena Declaration of the German Zoological Society .

Biology Didactics

Within this discipline, Hoßfeld is interested in questions of biological model making, the history of biological classroom collections, extracurricular learning locations and microscopy.

Science popularization and science policy

Together with the State Center for Political Education in Thuringia, Hoßfeld has published his research results on subjects such as biology and politics, Ernst Haeckel, the history of racial studies etc. in numerous books and various "sheets on Thuringia regional studies" to a broad public in a generally understandable form made accessible.
