The State Center for Political Education Thuringia (LZT) is a state organization dedicated to political education in the Free State of Thuringia .

On February 26, 1991, the then Prime Minister Josef Duchač (CDU) issued the order to set up the state headquarters. The order, which was published in the Law and Ordinance Gazette , contains more detailed information on the organization and objectives of the facility.

On the one hand, the state headquarters belongs to the government apparatus, on the other hand, it should act neutrally and not engage in party politics. The fact that it is an institution under public law that is subordinate to the Thuringian State Chancellery and is also housed in the same building speaks for the proximity to the government . The leader is always determined by the person who holds the office of prime minister. On the other hand, § 1 (2) of the above-mentioned order of February 26, 1991 speaks in favor of the neutrality obligation - it says: "The state headquarters acts as a politically independent institution of political education." The neutrality is to be monitored by a board of trustees.

Tasks of the LZT

The work of the State Center for Civic Education Thuringia aims to strengthen the democratic and political awareness of the citizens in the Free State and to promote their willingness and commitment to participate in political life. For this purpose, publications of various kinds on politically relevant topics are made available, events are organized and implemented and events by recognized educational institutions are funded. All of this is done with the aim of always guaranteeing impartiality and objectivity .

Parliamentary control and governance

The content-related work of the LZT is based on the free and democratic basic order. According to the mandate, the LZT works non-partisan. A board of trustees made up of ten members of the Thuringian state parliament is supposed to ensure that the work of the LZT is impartial.
