The State Center for Civic Education Hamburg is the central service facility for civic education in the Hanseatic city .

history

The State Center for Political Education emerged in 1974 from the Kuratorium for Citizenship Education founded in Hamburg in 1956 .

Created as an office in the Senate Chancellery , it was assigned to the Authority for Education and Sport in 2002 and to the Hamburg Authority for Schools and Vocational Training in 2011 .

Initially, the publicist Walter Tormin was in charge of the state headquarters . In 1976 the sociologist Helmut Bilstein became head of the facility. Two years later, in 1978, the economist Wiltrud Rehlen succeeded Helmut Bilstein. From 1985 to 2003, the sociologist Helga Kutz-Bauer headed the state center for political education. The historian Sabine Bamberger-Stemmann has been the head of the institution since 2003.

Field of activity

The task of the state headquarters is to promote political education on a non-partisan basis. The non-partisan nature of the work is ensured by a pluralistic advisory board.

The State Center for Civic Education Hamburg offers information, advice and support in questions of civic education. It publishes, organizes events, seminars and projects. The regional headquarters promotes political education offers through financial donations.

In terms of content, the State Center for Civic Education is committed to the Beutelsbach Consensus .

The regional headquarters has had its own information shop since 2004. It offers publications on political education. Publications and information on contemporary history and political issues are available to those interested.

For example, together with the Institute for the History of German Jews , the State Center for Civic Education publishes the series “ Stumbling blocks in Hamburg. Biographical Search for Traces ”. The brochures published within the series provide information about the biographies of the people, of whom the memory is preserved by the fact that a stumbling block mentions their name.
