The State Center for Civic Education Rhineland-Palatinate (LpB) is a non-partisan state institution for civic education in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The LpB was founded in 1973 and has been assigned to the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for Education, Science, Further Education and Culture ( MBWWK ) since 1993 . It has its headquarters in the state capital Mainz and three branch offices in Kaiserslautern (since 1995), Koblenz (since 2001) and Trier (since 2009). She is the successor to the Citizenship Study Group (BAK) Rhineland-Palatinate eV, founded in 1953, and the Institute for Citizenship Education of Rhineland-Palatinate, founded in 1955.

The LpB is divided into four sections. A 16-member board of trustees , half of which consists of members of the state parliament and half of people from public and academic life, is responsible for the political balance of the work . The current head of the LpB is Bernhard Kukatzki (as of 2017).

Like the other state centers for political education, the LpB Rhineland-Palatinate is independent and is not organizationally subordinate to the Federal Center for political education (BpB). It has its own program which deals with topics specific to Rhineland-Palatinate.

The state center for political education offers political education in Rhineland-Palatinate in the form of events, projects and publications, also in cooperation with other educational institutions. The aim is to promote political participation and the strengthening of the democratic awareness of the citizens in Rhineland-Palatinate. Memorial work

In 1991, the Rhineland-Palatinate state government declared memorial work , the maintenance of memorial sites and educational work about National Socialism to be a focus and commissioned the LpB with the implementation of this work.

In 1993 the LpB was able to start expanding the two state-owned concentration camp memorials in Osthofen and Hinzert , which have since been expanded into educational institutions. The LpB conducts events and exhibitions there. A variety of publications to clarify the Nazi era complement this area of ​​activity. In the Osthofen Concentration Camp Memorial, the LpB also set up the Rhineland-Palatinate NS Documentation Center. Since 1991, many contacts have been established with former prisoners of the two concentration camps, especially through French, Luxembourg and Polish organizations of former concentration camp prisoners. In Osthofen (since 1995) and in Hinzert (since 2005) permanent exhibitions show the history of the two concentration camps and their various connections in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and Europe.

On April 1, 2001, with the help of the LpB, the "State Working Group of Memorials and Remembrance Initiatives for the Nazi Time in Rhineland-Palatinate (LAG)" was founded in Mainz. The interest group, to which more than 40 initiatives and associations belong, has since enabled better networking of memorial work in Rhineland-Palatinate. Since 1991, the state headquarters have held annual information conferences on memorial work in Rhineland-Palatinate, in which information is provided about current developments in memorial work. A scientific advisory board headed by Wolfgang Benz from Berlin advises the regional headquarters on its activities. An art and culture advisory board headed by Guido Ludes supports the LpB in its cultural programs at both memorials.

Publications

The LpB's range of literature includes its own publications as well as books, films and CD-ROMs purchased from publishers, the Federal Agency for Civic Education (BpB) and other state centers. At the headquarters of the regional headquarters in Mainz, the memorials and the three branch offices, many publications can be taken away immediately and free of charge. In addition to free titles, the LpB's range of literature also includes publications that are only available for a fee. All publications can be ordered in writing as well as online directly from dispatch from the regional headquarters.

Many publications, such as B. the series "Blätter zum Land", in which Rhineland-Palatinate topics from politics, history and society are presented briefly and concisely, can be downloaded from the homepage. The best-known series of publications of the LpB are the political regional studies of Rhineland-Palatinate "Our Land", the "Blätter zum Land", the annually updated edition of the Basic Law and the State Constitution, documentation of the "Hambacher Dispute" and the topic series "On the matter".

In its library in Mainz, the LpB offers over 15,000 books and 55 periodicals to read and borrow; the offer is continuously updated. All available media are listed in an online catalog .

Events

The LpB's own and collaborative events include a. Readings, exhibitions, podium discussions, workshops , plays and information and specialist conferences on many topics. The events can be found on the homepage and are listed every six months in a printed event directory.

Cooperations and networks

The LpB is networked in many ways and works closely with a wide variety of institutions, initiatives and groups in political education on certain topics and consults on content-related issues with the "State Working Committee on Political Education", in which representatives from institutions of political education in Rhineland-Palatinate take part. The LpB has a "Europe working group" to coordinate European political education in Rhineland-Palatinate. The LpB supports its cooperation partners on request with grants for their work, especially at events.

The regional coordination of the "UN Millennium Goals Action Group" in Rhineland-Palatinate is also with the LpB.

The most important networks with which the LpB works are the Federal Working Group on Political Education and many memorial institutions at home and abroad.
