Michael Mutzel (born September 27, 1979 in Memmingen ) is a former German soccer player and today's functionary . He has been sports director at Hamburger SV since April 2019 .
Career as a player
In 1999 Mutzel took part in the Junior World Championship together with his future club colleague Christian Timm .
In his youth, Mutzel played for FC Augsburg , FC Memmingen , TSG Thannhausen and SV Greimeltshofen . From 2004 he played for Karlsruher SC ; he had previously been under contract with VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt . The defensive midfielder was only able to establish himself as a Bundesliga professional in the core team of the KSC during his third station and extended his contract, which expired in 2009, until June 30, 2011. After that, his contract was no longer extended. With KSC, Mutzel was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2007 and relegated in 2009.
Mutzel signed in January 2012 after half a year's break in the U23 of VfL Wolfsburg . There he received a contract until June 30, 2014. On March 22, 2012, the contract between Mutzel and VfL Wolfsburg was terminated for personal reasons.
Career as a functionary
In July 2012 he signed a contract as a youth coach and youth coordinator at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . From December 1, 2014 to December 31, 2015 he was the "Director of Professional Football" at SpVgg Greuther Fürth . Since February 2016 he has headed the Scouting department at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
On April 1, 2019, Mutzel became sports director at Hamburger SV under the sports director Ralf Becker . There he is responsible for the Bundesliga, youth and scouting areas. Mutzel has been working under Becker's successor Jonas Boldt since the end of May 2019 .
