society

In his youth, McGowan first played for Para Hills Knights SC in a northern suburb of his native Adelaide. In 2008 he moved to Heart of Midlothian in the home of his parents , where he first played in their youth team, before playing in the first team from 2010. For the 2010/11 season he was loaned to the Scottish club East Fife and from 2011 to 2012 again to the Australian club Gold Coast United . After returning to Scotland, he reached the final of the Scottish League Cup 2012/13 with Midlothian , but lost it 2: 3 against FC St. Mirren . In 2014 he moved to his hometown club Adelaide United . With United, he won the 2014 FFA Cup , which was held nationwide for the first time, and finished the 2015/16 season in first place in the A-League . Adelaide was also able to assert itself in the final round, winning the Grand Final on May 1, 2016, and thus the Australian championship for the first time. In the 2016/17 season , the team could not confirm the previous year's success and only ended up in ninth and penultimate place. Also in the AFC Champions League 2017 Adelaide was not convincing and was eliminated in the group stage. McGowan was used in five games and scored one goal. In May 2017 he received a contract with the Portuguese first division club FC Paços de Ferreira . Here he was only used in one cup game and so he was awarded to the South Korean first division club Gangwon FC for the entire 2018 season. After his loan contract expired, he was immediately given free transfer to the Danish first division club Vendsyssel FF . There he only came to three short appearances in the league. In June 2019 he returned to his homeland, where he received a three-season contract with the Western Sydney Wanderers .

National team

From 2008 to 2011 he played 28 games for the Australian U-20 national team , in which he scored four goals. He took part with the team in the 2010 U-19 Asian Cup, where the team lost 3-2 to North Korea in the final. Already with the semi-finals, the team had qualified for the U-20 World Cup 2011 , in which he also participated and came to two missions after which the Australians missed the knockout round. In 2012 he came to two appearances in the U-23 team , which had not qualified for the Olympic Games in London .

On May 30, 2017, Australia coach Ange Postecoglou nominated him as well as his brother Ryan for the 23-player squad representing Australia at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup . He was one of three players who were still without an A international appearance when they were nominated. On June 13, he came on in the 78th minute in the 4-0 draw against Brazil for his first appearance for the senior national team . At the tournament in Russia it was not used and was not taken into account for the last two group games in the World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Thailand and the playoff games against Syria .
