Ryan James McGowan (born August 15, 1989 in Adelaide ) is an Australian football player.

Career

McGowan, whose parents come from Glasgow , played in his youth in Australia with the Para Hills Knights and at the South Australian Sports Institute , before he moved to the youth boarding school of the Scottish club Heart of Midlothian in 2006 together with his compatriot Rocco Visconte . In the Hearts junior team , McGowan developed into a high performer and soon became captain of the youth team and also regularly plays in the reserve team.

After he was elected U-19 player of the year within the club in April 2008 and signed a new five-year contract, he made his competitive debut for the club's professional team on the last day of the 2007/08 season against FC Gretna . In October 2009, McGowan was loaned to the second division club Ayr United and scored just hours after the transfer took place in the 2-2 draw against Dundee FC.

In 2008, McGowan was part of the Australian squad that reached the semi-finals of the U-19 Asian Cup , thereby qualifying for the 2009 Junior World Cup in Egypt. At the World Cup finals, Australia failed without winning points in the group stage. McGowan was only used in the opening game against the Czech Republic, in which he was sent off towards the end of the game because of an "emergency brake".
