FFA Cup 2016

The 2017 FFA Cup was the fourth edition of the Australian men's soccer cup. The season began on July 26, 2017 and ended with the finale on November 22, 2017. Defending champions Melbourne City FC were eliminated in the quarter-finals against eventual winners Sydney FC .

A total of 735 soccer teams took part in the competition. 32 teams reached the first main round, including the ten clubs of the A-League 2016/17 , the champions of the National Premier Leagues 2016 and 21 lower-class clubs that prevailed in the regional qualifying rounds.

Sydney FC won for the first time with a 2-1 win over Adelaide United after extra time . The top scorer was the Brazilian Bobô from Sydney FC with eight goals.

Several hundred teams competed in the various regional qualifying rounds to qualify for one of 21 main round places to be awarded. The ten teams of the A-League 2016/17 were set for the main round. The champion of the National Premier Leagues 2016 received another direct starting place .

All nine regional associations of the Australian Football Association held qualifying rounds. The distribution of qualification places per regional association remained unchanged compared to the previous year. New South Wales got five, Queensland and Victoria four each, Northern New South Wales and Western Australia two each, the Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory, South Australia and Tasmania one each.
