Paul David Izzo (born January 6, 1995 in Adelaide ) is an Australian football goalkeeper .

Club career

Izzo played for NAB SC and later Campbelltown City during his youth, and in 2009 he was a fellow at the South Australian Sports Institute under Tony Vidmar . In 2010 and 2011 he received a scholarship from the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra .

Back in January 2011, Izzo signed a professional contract that came into effect on January 1, 2012. Izzo made his debut in the A-League on December 1, 2012 in a 2-1 loss to the Central Coast Mariners , goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic was staying with the Australian national team at that time . Two more league appearances followed by the end of the season. Behind Galekovic, chances of playing were rare, only in the 2014/15 season he made three more appearances in the league and an appearance in the first round of the FFA Cup 2014 (1-0 against Wellington Phoenix ). In the other rounds of the cup, including the 1-0 final win against Perth Glory , Galekovic was again in goal; in the final, his competitor John Hall was also on the bench.

Although Izzo had signed a new two-year contract with Adelaide in April 2015, he moved to league rivals Central Coast Mariners in July 2015 . At the start of the season, Izzo was substitute goalkeeper behind Liam Reddy at the Mariners . After he was suspended for disciplinary reasons in October 2015, Izzo was promoted to the regular goalkeeper. The Mariners' season performance was one of the weakest in league history, the team ended the season behind in the last place in the table, the team conceded by far the most goals against and Izzo only achieved his only win of the season on his 12th season appearance (3-1 at Wellington Phoenix ) with a total of 21 league appearances.

National team

Izzo has been a regular member of Australian selection teams since 2010. In October 2010 he was at the U-16 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan in the goal of the Australian selection, when they qualified for the U-17 World Cup 2011 in Mexico by reaching the semi-finals (1: 2 against Uzbekistan) . There, too, Izzo was part of the squad and was the goalkeeper when reaching the round of 16 (0: 4 against Uzbekistan).

After the tournament, Izzo moved up an age group and took part in the qualification for the U-19 Asian Cup 2012 in November 2011 with the U-20 selection . Also at the continental finals in November 2012, Izzo was a regular goalkeeper in the squad, the Australian team failed again in the semi-finals (1: 2 against Iraq), but this was enough for qualification for the U-20 World Cup in 2013 . Izzo was also in action at the World Cup finals in Turkey in summer 2013 and played all three games in the preliminary round. Izzo remained active in the U-20 age group and was also part of the squad at the U-19 Asian Cup in 2014 , but in the surprising preliminary round, Jordan Thurtell was preferred in goal by coach Paul Okon .

In 2015, appointments to the Australian U-23 squad followed , and he missed participation in the U-23 Asian Cup in 2016 , when the Australian team also missed the Olympic qualification due to a knee injury.
