Alexander William "Alex" Wilkinson (born August 13, 1984 in Sydney ) is an Australian football player .

Club career

Wilkinson began his playing career in the men's area in the National Soccer League (NSL) with Northern Spirit FC , for which he completed 45 appearances until the league was closed in 2004. He then kept fit in the national leagues of New South Wales before he signed with the Central Coast Mariners after creating the Australian professional game class A-League . There he was set up in central defense under coach Lawrie McKinna from the start and rose to become team captain in 2007. In 2006 and 2008 he reached the championship final with the Mariners, but both times they lost 1-0 there (against Sydney FC and Newcastle United Jets). With 172 appearances in the A-League, Wilkinson was the Mariners' record player at the time of his departure.

In July 2012, Wilkinson moved to the Korean club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors . There he reached the runner- up in the 2012 season and the Korean championship in 2014 and 2015 . He left South Korea in early 2016 and returned to Melbourne City FC in his home country. Sydney FC signed him in mid-2016 . There he was able to win the championship in 2017 .

National team

Wilkinson has represented Australian junior national teams on several occasions. In 2001 he won the Oceanic World Cup qualifying tournament with the Australian U-17 selection without any problems and was then part of the squad at the U-17 World Cup in 2001 in Trinidad and Tobago. He was on the starting line-up in all four of his team's tournament matches when he reached the quarter-finals and was counted among the key players in the Australian selection by the FIFA Technical Study Group , as was his central defense partner, Matthew Hunter.

In 2002 he won the qualifying tournament for the 2003 Junior World Cup in the United Arab Emirates with the U-20 selection and was one of the regular players in the squad of youth national coach Ange Postecoglou . Together with captain David Tarka , he formed the central defender duo during the tournament, including the 3-2 win over eventual world champions Brazil. The tournament ended for the Australian team in the round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat by the hosts.

In the following years Wilkinson was invited several times to training camps for the Australian national team, but it was not enough for an international match nomination.
