Status: end of career

Karim Matmour ( Arabic كريم مطمور, DMG Karīm Maṭmūr ; * June 25, 1985 in Strasbourg ) is a former French - Algerian soccer player who was used as a midfielder or striker during his playing career. He played in the Bundesliga for Borussia Mönchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt and made 101 appearances (five goals) in the top German division. Due to the origins of his family, Matmour was also eligible to play for the Algerian national team, with which he took part in the 2010 Africa Cup in Angola and in the same year in the World Cup in South Africa . Karim Matmour played 30 games (two goals) for the desert foxes .

Origin, family and youth

Karim Matmour was born in 1985 as one of six children to Algerian immigrants in Strasbourg and grew up there.

Player career

Matmour started playing football at ASPV Strasbourg at the age of five . In 1999 he moved to the youth department of the then first division team Racing Strasbourg . From 2001 he came to missions in the reserve team. In the winter break of the 2003/04 season he went back to his home club.

In the 2004/05 season he moved across the nearby border to SC Freiburg . In July 2005, Volker Finke took Matmour to the training camp for the professionals who had previously been relegated from the Bundesliga . On January 28, 2006, the 19th matchday of the 2nd Bundesliga , he made his debut for the professional team of SC Freiburg in the game against FC Carl Zeiss Jena . On the 32nd matchday in the game against Hansa Rostock he scored his first goal. After three goals in 31 games, he narrowly missed promotion to the Bundesliga with SC Freiburg at the end of the season. In July 2007, Matmour extended his contract term to 2010 and scored five goals in five assists in 32 games in the 2007/08 second division season.

For the 2008/09 season he moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach , which had previously been promoted to the Bundesliga. He made his competitive debut for Borussia on August 9, 2008 in the first round match of the DFB Cup against VfB Fichte Bielefeld in the starting eleven. He played his first Bundesliga game at the start of the season on August 17, 2008 in the 1: 3 defeat against VfB Stuttgart . Matmour marked his first Bundesliga goal on August 30, 2008 (3rd matchday) in a 3-2 win over Werder Bremen . In this season, in which Borussia played against relegation and finished in 15th place, Matmour was used in all 34 Bundesliga games and scored three goals. In the 2009/10 season, in which they fluctuated between 11th and 13th place, he scored a goal in 25 Bundesliga appearances and ended up in twelfth place in the table with Borussia. In the 2010/11 season, in which Borussia Mönchengladbach finished 18th after the first half of the season and saved himself to 16th place after the change of coach from Michael Frontzeck to Lucien Favre , Matmour made 18 appearances in the Bundesliga. He did not score a goal.

On July 1, 2011, Matmour moved to relegated from the Bundesliga Eintracht Frankfurt . He played his first competitive game for Eintracht on July 15, 2011, when he came on as a substitute in the 80th minute on the first day of the 2nd Bundesliga match at SpVgg Greuther Fürth and scored the winning goal in the 89th minute. He had a total of 28 missions this season, four of them over the full season. He scored six goals and rose as second in the table with Eintracht in the Bundesliga.

In November 2012, Matmour was sent off the pitch twice within seven days, which was a novelty in the Bundesliga.

For the 2013/14 season , Matmour moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern . He signed a contract with the second division team until June 30, 2015. On July 20, 2013 he made his debut in the away game against SC Paderborn , which FCK won 1-0. By the end of the 2014/15 season, he had played 56 second division games for FCK, in which he scored five goals.

After his contract expired in the summer of 2015, Matmour moved to Kuwait for free in the Kuwaiti Premier League for the club al-Arabi . In January 2016 he signed a contract with the English second division club Huddersfield Town . His contract was not renewed after the end of the season because there was no agreement on the salary.

For the 2016/17 season , Matmour moved to the German second division club TSV 1860 Munich , with whom he received a two-year contract. At the beginning of 2017, there was a serious rift between the club and Matmour. Coach Vitor Pereira sorted Matmour out of the squad during the 2016/17 winter break, among other things because Matmour was a ten and he preferred a system without a tens. Matmour should only continue training in the club's U21s. Headlines also made headlines when Matmours and his partner were invited to a team dinner at the club in February 2017. There were numerous other media speculations about an escalation of the dispute, but without receiving official confirmation from the player or the club. In fact, there was a labor court hearing a few weeks later, but the interim injunction sought by Matmour for the right to training with the professional team was rejected, while the main proceedings were postponed. Matmour unilaterally drew a contract clause in March 2017 that extended the contract with 1860 for one year until 2019. This was no longer valid after relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga and the non-receipt for the 3rd division .

Matmour found a new employer in August 2017 with the Australian first division club Adelaide United .

After only 11 appearances (8 in the league, 3 in the cup), Matmour dissolved his contract with the club in December 2017 and ended his active career.

National team

On February 7, 2007 Matmour made his debut in the Algerian national team in a 2-1 win over Libya . He scored two goals in 30 international matches.

In mid-November 2009 he qualified with the national team for the 2010 World Cup . In the group stage he faced Slovenia , England and the USA . Matmour was used in all games. At the beginning of the year he had already participated in the 2010 African Cup of Nations and scored a goal in five games.

Matmour stated on May 3, 2012 that he was no longer available for the national team because he wanted to concentrate on his club career. He last played for his country against Gambia on February 29, 2012.

Coaching career

On January 6, 2018, Matmour joined the national division Kehler FV as an assistant coach. Matmour took over his post as head coach at the start of the 2018/19 season, but resigned in October. In February 2020 he became a scout for Bayer 04 Leverkusen for France.

Play style

Because of his high basic speed and agility, but also because of his often lack of overview on the ball, Matmour's style of play is often reminiscent of the behavior of a bat . As a result, he was nicknamed "Batmour" by fans.

Others

At the beginning of May 2007, Matmour criticized the later French President, Nicolas Sarkozy , and accused him of creating conflicts because of derogatory statements against young French people with a migrant background.

Matmour speaks French , German and understands Arabic according to its own statements. Matmour is married to the singer of the German band Milk & Honey , Manel Filali.
