Matthew "Matt" Simon (born January 22, 1986 in Sydney ) is an Australian football player . The striker is under contract with A-League club Sydney FC .

Club career

Simon began his active career at the amateur club East Gosford and then played for Central Coast Lightning in the NSW Winter Super League . During the Pre-Season Cup 2006 Simon was in the line-up of the Central Coast Mariners for the first time , but had to vacate his place again at the start of the season. Towards the end of the 2006/07 season he came back to the squad as a replacement for an injured player and played for the Mariners on the last three match days.

In the following season he was a permanent member of the squad and made a total of 20 league appearances, 16 of them by substitution. He was also substituted in in the championship final against Newcastle United Jets , but could not prevent the 0-1 defeat. His breakthrough came in the 2008/09 season when he scored 11 goals this season, just one goal behind top scorer Shane Smeltz .

From January to April 2013 he played in the K-League with Chunnam Dragons , but returned to the Mariners in May of the same year. After two years, he moved to Sydney FC in the summer of 2015 . With the club he was Australian champion in the A-League 2016/17 .

National team

Simon completed several games for the Australian Olympic selection in 2008 and was nominated as a reserve player for the Olympic soccer tournament in China. After an injury to Archie Thompson , he was nominated for the last group game against Ivory Coast and was used in the 0-1 defeat for 17 minutes.

In early 2009 he made his senior national team debut against Indonesia in qualifying for the 2011 Asian Cup .
