Joseph Arthur "Joey" Gibbs (born June 13, 1992 in Gosford ) is an Australian football player .

Career

Gibbs from Gosford was awarded the 2008 Lucas Neill Scholarship , which enabled him to practice training at the English professional clubs West Ham United , Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town . In early 2009 he made his debut for Manly United in the NSW Premier League at the age of 16 and established himself as a regular. For the 2009/10 season, the striker was given the opportunity to play for the youth team of Sydney FC in the National Youth League and only came there as a substitute in the second half of the season due to an injury. After Steve Corica and John Aloisi fell out of the professional team before the championship final against Melbourne Victory , Gibbs was surprisingly a substitute for the final squad. When the score was 1-1, he came on for Alex Brosque in the 115th minute of extra time in front of 45,560 spectators - a record for an A-League debutant. The game was ultimately decided on penalties, in which Gibbs' Sydney FC prevailed 5-3. However, due to his minority, he was only able to participate to a limited extent in the subsequent celebrations.

At the end of the A-League season he returned to Manly United in the NSWPL and gained further experience there before moving to the Belgian third division club ROC Charleroi-Marchienne in summer 2010 . His stay there lasted only a few months before he trained with Sydney in early 2011 , but missed inclusion in the squad for the group stage of the 2011 AFC Champions League , which will be played during the Australian break. He then rejoined his hometown club Manly United. In the 2011/12 season he played again for the youth team of Sydney FC before joining the Marconi Stallions in the New South Wales Premier League . For the Stallions, Gibbs met eleven times in 22 league appearances in the 2012 regular season and was appointed to the NSW All Stars Team. In the subsequent championship play-offs he prevailed with Marconi and won the championship of New South Wales with a 2-0 final win against the Bonnyrigg White Eagles . Gibbs was earning his living at the time as an employee at Domino's Pizza .

In July 2012 Gibbs trained on a trial basis with the newly formed A-League franchise Western Sydney Wanderers and scored four goals in the Wanderers' historic first game in a 5-0 win against fifth-rate Nepean FC in the second half. Some time later he also met as a test player for the Central Coast Mariners in a friendly game, where he was finally offered a contract for the youth team in mid-September. Shortly before the start of the season, Gibbs finally received a one-year contract with the Wanderers in early October. Gibbs made his debut for the Wanderers on Matchday 4 in a 1-0 win against reigning champions Brisbane Roar , when he replaced Dino Kresinger on the starting line-up in the striker . His first professional goal came two weeks later in a 2-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets . Until the end of the season, when the Wanderers were first champions of the regular season and were defeated in the play-offs in the final 2-0 to the Central Coast Mariners, his playing times remained sporadic. Shortly after the end of the season, he was one of four players whose contracts were not renewed.

A little later he found a new club in the A-League for the 2013/14 season with the Newcastle United Jets . For this he scored the 2-0 goal on his first appearance a few minutes after his substitution against Brisbane Roar , but was only used three more times as a substitute in the further course of the season and received no new contract offer at the end of the season. After he was briefly in the National Premier Leagues NSW with the APIA Leichhardt Tigers in mid-2014 , before he moved to Hong Kong for the first division promoted Tai Po FC for the second half of the year .

The 2015 season Gibbs played for Blacktown City , for which he scored 16 goals in 18 games of the season and thus contributed to winning the championship of New South Wales. In the subsequent national championship finals, he was also successful and scored two goals in the 3-1 final win against the Western Australian representative Bayswater City SC . For his performance in the final, Gibbs also received the John Kosmina Medal as the best player of the game.
