Richard Garcia (born September 4, 1981 in Perth ) is an Australian football player on the position of striker.
Career
West Ham United
Garcia began his professional career at West Ham United after attending the youth academy there for several years. During his youth at West Ham he won the FA Youth Cup and the FA Premier Youth League with the youth team in the 1998/1999 season . In this team he played alongside later stars like Joe Cole and Michael Carrick . Garcia was one of the few players this season who played in every round and always played through. In August 1999, Garcia signed a professional contract with West Ham United. In August 2000 he was loaned to Leyton Orient to get more match practice. However, he was forced to return to West Ham in November 2000 due to a knee injury. He played his first professional game for West Ham in the League Cup in September 2001 against Reading FC . However, he did not succeed in asserting himself permanently in the team, which is why he mostly had to slip into the reserve role. After West Ham was promoted to the first division again in 2003, Garcia got a little more playing time, but a regular place was far away. After only 16 appearances, he finally moved to Colchester United .
Colchester United
Garcia signed with Colchester in September 2004 and made his debut against Swindon Town that same month . In total, he made 30 missions in the 2004/05 season, scoring six goals. In the following season, Garcia played an important role in the team, with his help Colchester managed to move up to the Football League Championship by finishing second in Football League One. In the FA Cup , the fifth round was reached, but where they failed at the eventual winner, Chelsea FC . Colchester dominated the game and was closer to the winning goal than Chelsea, but Garcia's cross was intercepted by Ricardo Carvalho and from there he was able to slip the ball into the net undisturbed by the goalkeeper (the game ended 3-1). In March 2006, the season for Garcia was over due to another knee injury. At the end of the season, Garcia signed a new deal with Colchester United. In the 2006/07 season he came to 36 missions in which he scored seven goals.
Hull City
Instead of signing a new contract with Colchester, he signed a three-year contract with Hull City on July 2, 2007 and moved to the then second division club for free. He made his debut for Hull in August 2007 against Plymouth Argyle and his first goal followed in the next game in a 3-0 away win against Crewe Alexandra . In the 2007-08 season he played a leading role in the team from Hull City, however, he was thrown back by a shoulder injury. He made his comeback in the play-off win against Bristol City in May 2008, which promoted his team to the Premier League . He played his first game for Hull City in the Premier League on August 18 against Fulham , where he shone in his winger position.
Change to Australia
For the 2012/2013 season he moved to the Australian A-League , where he first played for Melbourne Heart and from August 2013 for Sydney FC .
International
In April 2008, in an interview with the Australian newspaper Sun-Herald, he said that his goal was to play for Sooceroos, Australia's national soccer team, and that playing in the Premier League with Hull City would help him make that dream come true. On August 19, 2008, he finally played his first international match when he was substituted on for the second half. The game against South Africa in London ended 2-2. His 18th and last international game to date, he played under the coach Holger Osieck on December 9, 2012 against the Taiwanese national soccer team .
