The Olympic Kingsway Sports Club , often referred to as Kingsway Olympic , is an Australian football club based in the Western Australian capital, Perth . The club, founded in 1953 by Macedonian immigrants, played for several decades in the top division of Western Australia and won the state championship in 1978 and 1980, but has only played lower class since 2000.

history

The club was founded in 1953 under the name Olympic Macedonia by Macedonian immigrants and from 1959 belonged to the top division of the state of Western Australia. For a long time, the club occupied midfield placements before winning the championship for the first time in 1978, a success that could be repeated two years later. In both title wins they were level on points with Spearwood Dalmatinac , but had the better goal quotient . In 1978 the name was also renamed Olympic Kingsway , because the West Australian Football Association only allowed ethnic names in exceptional cases. However, a Macedonian crown contained in the club's coat of arms still indicates the roots of the club. 1985 Olympic Kingsway rose for the first time in the club's history from the major league, but returned after one season, a process that was repeated in 1994. In 1999 the team, also known as "The Green Machine" because of their green jerseys, rose for the third time from the Western Australia Premier League and has not returned to the top division since then. In 2005, the club could no longer hold in the Semi-Pro First Division and slipped into the amateur camp.

In particular, in the late 1990s, a number of Australian professional footballers began and in some cases made their first steps in the Kingsway youth area, including Chris and Jamie Coyne , Jamie Harnwell , Nik Mrdja , Nick Ward , Stan Lazaridis , Richard Garcia and Daniel De Silva .

Venues

Olympic Kingsway's first venue was on Wellington Street in East Perth . As a result, the club changed its home several times, played in Memorial Park in Mount Yokine, in the Velodrome in Mount Hawthorn and in Perry Lakes. The club has been playing in Kingsway Reserve in the suburb of Landsdale since 1974 .
