Craig Alexander Goodwin (born December 16, 1991 in Adelaide ) is an Australian football player .

Career

Goodwin, the son of British parents, began playing football at the age of six in the northern suburbs of Adelaide with Munno Para City SC, and as a teenager he played for the Para Hills Knights and the Enfield City Falcons . He took his first steps in the adult sector from 2009 to 2010 with the Adelaide Raiders in the FFSA Super League . After he missed the admission to the youth team during trial training at the local A-League club Adelaide United , he switched to the sporting stronger Victorian Premier League for the Oakleigh Cannons in Melbourne for the 2011 season . With the Cannons, Goodwin finished second in the regular season, but often only came on as a substitute. In the final round, he played a decisive role when his team reached the finals. Goodwin first scored the winning goal against South Melbourne in the minor semi-final and converted the decisive penalty in the preliminary final against Hume City . Only in the final did the team lose to the Green Gully Cavaliers 2: 3 after extra time. Immediately after the final, he succeeded Oakleigh coach Arthur Papas , who had accepted the position as John Aloisi's assistant coach on the newly formed Melbourne Heart youth team . With the youth team, Goodwin competed in the National Youth League in the 2011/12 season and showed convincing performances. In addition to his footballing career, Goodwin was working at Kentucky Fried Chicken at the time to supplement his income.

When it became foreseeable that the nominal left-back of Hearts, Aziz Behich , would be nominated for the Olympic selection and would therefore be out of several games, John van 't Schip , coach of the professional team, reacted and let Goodwin train with the professional team from the beginning of 2012. With its philosophy, shaped by Ajax Amsterdam , to compensate for player losses with youth players if possible instead of using players from outside the position, Goodwin made his professional debut in the A-League on February 4, 2012 at the derby against Melbourne Victory . He stood as a substitute for Aziz Behich, who was on an international trip, on the starting line-up as a left full-back and catapulted himself onto the national football stage with an outstanding performance. He was also part of the starting line-up on the following two match days before he had to give up his place in the team after Behich's return. Goodwin's achievements did not go unnoticed by the Australian federation: U-23 selection coach Aurelio Vidmar appointed him to the Australian U-23 national team for the first time in March 2012 for the last match in qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games , Australia had to At this point, however, there is no longer any chance of qualifying for the tournament. Goodwin played the entire 90 minutes of the game against Iraq (final score 0-0), the game also served as the first test for Vidmar in view of the newly created U-22 Asian Cup 2014 .

For the 2012/13 season he had offers for a professional contract from both the Hearts and Newcastle United Jets , where Papas was briefly coach of the youth team and assistant coach of the professional team from November 2011. Goodwin ultimately decided to join the Newcastle Jets and signed a two-year deal. While he was used as a left defender at Melbourne Heart, Jets coach Gary van Egmond Goodwin moved further forward and put him in the first season games in left midfield as an attacking winger. Goodwin scored his first professional goal on Matchday 2 in a 3-2 away win against Sydney FC . His overall performance made headlines again, although the game had been stylized in advance of the clash between the two marquee engagements Alessandro del Piero and Emile Heskey .
