Alessandro Del Piero (born November 9, 1974 in Conegliano ) is a former Italian football player .

He played in the position of the striker and is considered a symbol of Juventus Turin , where he spent most of his professional career and holds numerous club-internal records. In Italy Del Piero is known by the nickname Pinturicchio , which Giovanni Agnelli gave him, named after the Italian painter Pinturicchio . Of the Juve vehicle trailers it is based on Ronaldo , who in Italy as Il Fenomeno (The Phenomenon) , also was named Fenomeno Vero (The real phenomenon) called.

Career

Beginnings

Del Piero began his career in an amateur club in his hometown. In 1990 he moved to Calcio Padova , which was initially not convinced of him. Del Piero made his Serie B debut for Padova in the 1991/92 season at the age of 16 . From then on he commuted between the professional team and the youth team Allievi nazionali .

Juventus Turin

At the age of 18, he moved to Juventus Turin in the summer of 1993 . There he trained with the professional team and was frequently used by coach Giovanni Trapattoni . At that time, with Fabrizio Ravanelli , Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Baggio, there were three top strikers in the Juventus squad. He made his Serie A debut on September 12, 1993 in the 1-1 away game at Foggia Calcio , when he came on for Ravanelli in the 74th minute. A week later he scored his first goal in a 4-0 win against AC Reggiana . In the 1993/94 season he also played for the youth team Primavera and won the Italian championship with this .

In the summer of 1994 Marcello Lippi became a coach and Luciano Moggi and Antonio Giraudo took over the management. The idea was to send Del Piero to AC Parma for a year to collect match practice, but this was rejected again. In the 1994/95 season he became a regular player and won his first national championship with Juventus , the first for the club in nine years.

When the fixed numbering of the players was introduced for the 1995/96 season , Del Piero was awarded the shirt number 10, which Omar Sívori or Michel Platini had worn before him. With six goals in eleven European Cup games, he contributed to his team's victory in the Champions League this season. He later scored his team with his goal in the final against CA River Plate to win the World Cup . Del Piero was named the best player in the World Cup final.

In the 1997/98 season he won the Scudetto again with Juventus and played what was probably the most successful season of his career. He scored 21 goals in 32 league games and also 10 goals in 10 games of the Champions League, in which they were only defeated in the final Real Madrid .

On November 8, 1998, he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture on his right knee in the game against Udinese Calcio and was out for nine months. Since that serious injury, Del Piero has often been blamed for having lost strength. Only in the 2002/03 season he was able to build on his performance before the injury.

The 1998/99 season was disappointing for Del Piero and Juventus, the team ended up only in sixth place in the table, mainly due to his and Filippo Inzaghi's injury, which is why Lippi resigned during the season and was inherited by Carlo Ancelotti . The following two seasons ( 1999/00 and 2000/01 ) were mixed, Juve just missed the championship and was eliminated early in the European Cup; In the 2000/01 season Juventus Turin failed in the group stage of the Champions League at Hamburger SV , Panathinaikos Athens and Deportivo La Coruña and was eliminated as the bottom of the group.

It was only when Lippi returned as a coach for the 2001/02 season that Del Piero and the team found their way back to success. In the 2001/02 and 2002/03 seasons he contributed 16 goals each to win the championship. In 2003, the team reached the Champions League final again, which they lost on penalties against AC Milan .

In the summer of 2004 Fabio Capello took over the coaching position at Juventus and led the team to two championships ( 2004/05 and 2005/06 ). However, these were revoked again after the verdict on the Italian soccer scandal in 2005/06 . Del Piero no longer had a regular place under Capello, as he relied on the two other strikers David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimović . As a substitute, Del Piero scored 14 and twelve goals respectively in the two seasons.

Del Piero played the 2006/07 season with Juve in Serie B. After the forced relegation due to the scandal, he was the first player to openly acknowledge his club and promise the fans to remain loyal to Juve, no matter which league you are in next season would play. “A cavalier does not leave his lady” (“Un cavaliere non lascia mai la sua signora”) were his words. His coach was Didier Deschamps , who resigned shortly before the end of the season after a dispute with the presidium. Del Piero was again captain of the team and led the team to win Serie B and thus to direct promotion. With 20 goals in 35 games he was also the top scorer in the second highest Italian division.

Del Piero got off to a mediocre start into the 2007/08 season , with the newly signed Vincenzo Iaquinta in particular contesting his regular place. On October 16, 2007, after lengthy negotiations, Del Piero extended his contract, which expired in 2008, to June 30, 2010. After that, he was part of the regular formation until the end of the season. With his 21 goals this season, he helped Juve to third place in Serie A and secured the title of top scorer from his strike partner Trezeguet.

In May 2011, Del Piero extended his contract with Juventus Turin for another year until June 2012. In the 2011/12 season he played 23 games, 19 of them as a substitute, and was again Italian champion with his club. His 698th and last competitive game for Juve he completed in the final of the Coppa Italia on May 20, 2012 against SSC Napoli .

Sydney FC

On September 5, 2012, he signed a two-year deal with Sydney FC . This commitment should not only strengthen the team, but also serve to make the A-League more attractive and popular. In his first season for Sydney, the team missed on the last day of the season by a 1: 3 loss to Queensland Roar to make it into the Elimination Finals . So they ended up below expectations in a place in the lower midfield, although Del Piero was even fourth on the scorers list with 14 goals.

In the 2013-14 season , Del Piero was the team's new captain . At the end of the season on April 28, 2014, he announced the end of his time as a footballer in Australia.

Delhi Dynamos FC

On August 20, 2014, the Indian club Delhi Dynamos signed FC Del Piero, where he was a marquee player , a world-famous player. Every Indian Super League team must have such a player in their squad. His first game of the Indian Super League 2014 he played on October 14, the 1st matchday, against FC Pune City when he came on for Morten Skoubo in the 38th minute . Here he met David Trezeguet , his long-time teammate at Juventus Turin .

Del Piero was used in nine of the 13 other games and scored one goal. The Delhi Dynamos finished the season in fifth place and could not qualify for the play-offs. Del Piero's engagement in Delhi ended after the season. He ended his active career in October 2015.

National team

After 13 gates in 17 U-17 and U-18 - caps Alessandro Del Piero debut on 20 January 1993 under Cesare Maldini in the U-21 team . In the senior national team he made his debut two years later, on March 25, 1995, in a 4-1 win against Estonia . He scored his first international goal on November 15, 1995 against Latvia .

Del Piero played from the European Championship in 1996 at various world and European championships.

At the European Football Championship in 2000 he reached the final with Italy , which was only lost to France in extra time through Golden Goal .

At the 2002 World Cup , 2004 European Championship and 2006 World Cup , he had no regular place and was often only substituted on, which didn't prevent him from scoring important goals as a substitute. For example the equalizing goal against Mexico at the 2002 World Cup, which enabled the Squadra Azzurra to advance and which he spontaneously dedicated to his father, who died shortly before, or the decisive 2-0 in the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup against Germany .

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Del Piero faced the same problem as in 2002. Although Francesco Totti had broken his shin and fibula three and a half months before the start of the World Cup in a game against FC Empoli , Del Piero was only in the second row again. Marcello Lippi preferred to rely on the untrained Totti in the first games. In addition, with Luca Toni (31 goals in the 2005/06 season) and Alberto Gilardino were two other top strikers in the ranks of the Azzurri , who were difficult to get past. Nevertheless, Lippi knew from many years together at Juventus Turin about Del Piero's strengths, that he would be ready at any time when he needed him. For the round of 16 against Australia's selection , Del Piero was allowed to play from the start, as Totti had previously shown changeable performances, but he could not convince and was relegated to the bench again. In the quarter-finals against the Ukraine he was not used, in the semi-finals against Germany he was substituted in the 104th minute and with his 2-0 in the 120th minute he finally shot Italy into the final against France, where he was 86. Minute was substituted on and scored the decisive goal on penalties to make it 5: 3 for the subsequent World Cup victory for the Italians.

After the World Cup, he returned to the national team after a short break. In the European Championship qualifier in Georgia , however, he was banished to the stands by the new coach Roberto Donadoni , officially for "tactical reasons". The colleagues of the national team sided with Del Piero, who stated that he wanted to continue to assert himself there. However, Donadoni rarely nominated him. After Del Piero's strong performance in the second half of the 2007/08 season and winning the top scorer rating, Donadoni finally appointed him to the squad for the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland . In the tournament, the striker was used in three of the four games and failed with his team in the quarter-finals against eventual European champions Spain .

Del Piero played his last international game on September 10, 2008 in a 2-0 win over Georgia .

Worth mentioning

He scored many goals from a field in front of the left side of the penalty area. This zone was named "Zona del Piero" by the media. In 2019, Del Piero announced that he is the owner of the United Premier Soccer League club LA 10 FC from Los Angeles , California , which was founded in September 2018 and contains the city name for Los Angeles and his jersey number. He also owns the ADP10 Football Academy in Glendale, California . He also owns the Italian restaurant N10 Restaurant in downtown Beverly Hills .
