David Anthony Johnson (born August 15, 1976 in Kingston ) is a former Jamaican football player , who mainly gained fame through his time at the English clubs Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest .
Player career
Bury FC and Ipswich Town
After his breakthrough in the Manchester United first team was denied, David Johnson moved to Bury FC in July 1995 . With the fourth division from the nearby Manchester situated Bury Johnson 1995/96 was promoted to the third division. In the 1996/97 season Johnson reached (44 league games / 8 hits) with Bury winning the third division championship and thus the direct march through to the second division.
On November 13, 1997 he moved to the second division side Ipswich Town and scored twenty league goals for his new club by the end of the 1997/98 Football League First Division . After thirteen goals in the 1998-99 season and a renewed from in the first playoff round, scored David Johnson 1999/2000 22 league matches and climbed with Ipswich to a 4: 2 in the playoff finals to FC Barnsley in the first division.
Nottingham Forest
After fourteen goalless games in the 2000/01 Premier League , Johnson moved to second division Nottingham Forest on January 12, 2001 . After he could not build on his previous hit rate at Forest, he was loaned to Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley FC in the second half of the 2001/02 season.
In the Football League First Division 2002/03 Johnson (25 goals) proved his accuracy again and formed with Marlon Harewood (20 goals) the best striker duo in the league. Nottingham Forest moved into the play-offs as sixth in the table, but failed there prematurely to Sheffield United (1: 1 and 3: 4 after extra time). Johnson was chosen as an award for his good performance together with his teammate Michael Dawson in the PFA Team of the Year of the second division.
Due to injury, he was out six months in 2003/04 and only played 17 league games (7 goals). In the newly introduced Football League Championship 2004/05 , he could only achieve six goals for his relegation-threatened club and was loaned to Sheffield United in the final stages of the season . Since Nottingham was relegated as the penultimate, Johnson (17 games / 3 goals) played with his team in 2005/06 only in the third-rate Football League One . In November 2005 he suffered a back injury that ultimately led to the premature end of his playing career.
