The Johansen Islands are a group of small, low and partially snow-free islands off the northwestern end of the Antarctic Alexander I Island . They are located 20 km west-northwest of Cape Vostok .
The crew of the USS Bear discovered them in 1940 as part of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941). It is named after Bendik Johansen (1889 – unknown), ice pilot on this and the first two Antarctic expeditions ( 1928–1930 and 1933–1935) of the US polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd .
