Bert Jacobs (born March 5, 1941 in Zandvoort , † November 14, 1999 ) was a Dutch football player and coach.

Player career

As a player, Jacobs was less successful. In his short active career he represented the colors of Zandvoortmeeuwen and HFC Haarlem .

Coaching career

At the age of 27, Jacobs came to his first coaching station. At Velox , one of the three predecessor clubs of FC Utrecht, he was a year before he took over the reins of the newly founded club FC Utrecht . Jacobs achieved his best placement with the FCU in 1971/72 when he finished sixth. After four years, the coach moved to league competitor Roda Kerkrade in the summer of 1974 . There he replaced Fritz Pliska, who was only hired in February . With Kerkrade, Jacobs always played in the top third of the table. The big league success didn't want to happen. In 1976 they reached the final of the KNVB Cup . However, due to a goal from Ralf Edström, Roda lost 1-0 to PSV Eindhoven . In 1980/81 Jacobs moved to Willem II Tilburg . However, he only stayed two seasons without being able to celebrate major successes. Finally, Seiko SA lured the soccer teacher to Hong Kong . There he was able to win the national title and returned to the Netherlands in the summer of 1983. Sparta Rotterdam secured the services of the coach. A sixth place was not enough and Jacobs left the team again. With Fortuna Sittard , the seventh coaching station, Jacobs stayed for three years. In 1985 he led the club to seventh place in the Eredivisie, the best placement in the club's history. This success was only repeated in 1991 and 1999. The year before, they made it into the final of the KNVB Cup. Again Jacobs failed in the final. Nevertheless, the club was entitled to start in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1984/85 . It wasn't until the quarterfinals that the eventual winners Everton ended. In December 1986, he resigned from office to focus on the cancer that was within him. After improving, Jacobs signed with Vitesse Arnhem in the summer of 1987 . After initial difficulties, he led the then second division back in 1989 to the top Dutch league. There he established the team and led them to the top 5 of the league three times in a row until 1992. During the winter break of 1992/93, the Spanish representative Sporting Gijón got him . Jacobs was released in April 1993. At RKC Waalwijk he was active again for two years, but always played with the club against relegation. After a short year at FC Volendam , Jacobs went back to Waalwijk, coached the team for a year and then became the club's technical director.

On November 14, 1999, the soccer coach died from cancer.
