Robert von Erdberg - actually: von Erdberg-Krzenciewski - (born June 6, 1866 in Riga ; † April 3, 1929 in Berlin ) was a German educator, the "father of free popular education".

Life

After studying economics, which he completed with a doctorate, von Erdberg set to work to improve the quality of life of the working class through education . In 1896 he became head of the department for popular education in the Central Office for Workers' Welfare Institutions. In 1920 he took over the department for national education newly created by the State of Prussia in Berlin, which was affiliated with the Ministry for Science, Art and National Education . He was married to Amy Wesselhoeft from Cambridge (USA) since 1905, their daughter was Eleanor von Erdberg .

Adult education pioneer

Erdberg was part of the new direction in adult education and adult education . Together with Fritz Coerper, he founded the journal “Volksbildungsarchiv. Contributions to the scientific deepening of popular education efforts ”and was co-editor of the magazine“ Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft. Monthly for the entire adult education sector ”. At the same time he was also involved in the development of the public library system.

He was one of the founders of the Hohenrodter Bund , which was concerned with basic questions and theoretical development in popular education in the Weimar Republic .
