Leonardo Benevolo

Leonardo Benevolo (born September 25, 1923 in Orta San Giulio ; † January 5, 2017 in Cellatica ) was an Italian architect and architectural historian . His work, The History of the City , published in 1975, is considered the standard work in urban planning .

Life

Benevolo completed a degree in architecture at the University of Rome , which he graduated in 1946. He subsequently taught the history of architecture in Rome and at the universities of Florence , Venice and Palermo and initially focused on the differences between Greek and Roman urban planning in antiquity. As a result of this research, he received the Chair of Architectural History at the University of Rome in 1956 . In addition to his teaching activities, Benevolo was also practically active as an architect and urban planner. Among other things, he was involved in the redesign of the Bologna exhibition center and drafted the new regulatory plan for Ascoli Piceno and that of Monza .

Benevolo's journalistic activity has received wide international recognition. His urban history works are characterized by a broad cultural knowledge and comprehensive, but easily comprehensible presentation.

For his work he was awarded the Medaglia ai benemeriti della cultura e dell'arte .
