Pettenasco ( Piedmontese and Lombard Pitnasch ) is an Italian commune with 1350 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Novara (NO), Piedmont region .
geography
Pettenasco is located in the delta of the Pescone torrent in Lake Orta.
The municipality covers an area of 7 km² . The community consists of the districts Pratolungo and Crabbia. Crabbia lies on a headland in the lake formed by a hill. The village complex is still medieval. Crabbia is particularly known for its view over the entire lake.
Pratolungo is located above the train station east of the main town. The small baroque church Madonna della Neve, which lies at the end of a 400-year-old avenue of sweet chestnut trees, is important for tourism. In the center of the village there is a small Renaissance church, the Church of San Grato.
The neighboring municipalities are Armeno , Miasino , Nonio , Omegna , Orta San Giulio and Pella .
history
The area of today's Pettenasco was probably settled by Celts and Ligurians as early as pre-Roman times. Archaeological excavations discovered tombs from Roman times. According to tradition, the Roman governor of the area is said to have had his seat in Pettenasco in the late Roman Empire. The place is mentioned for the first time in documents in 892, its own local statutes have existed since 1433.
Attractions
An important building is the parish church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria. This was built in 1778 from a Romanesque chapel from the 12th century, from which the smaller tower and the left part of the apse still come today . Various medieval residential buildings are still present in the town.
The townscape is shaped by the railway viaduct on the line from Gozzano to Omegna . In the village, the Museo dell'Arte e della Tornitura del Legno is dedicated to the art of wood turning and the history of the small woodworking industry in the village and region.
