Jonathan Melvoin

Jonathan Melvoin ( December 6, 1961 - July 12, 1996 ) was an American musician .

Melvoin comes from a musical family; his father was the pianist Mike Melvoin , his twin sisters Wendy and Susannah played in the band with Prince in the 1980s . Jonathan Melvoin learned to play the drums , but friends and relatives thought he could probably master any instrument. In the 1980s, Melvoin performed with various punk bands such as The Dickies . He was also involved in various music projects; he made musical contributions to Wendy and Lisa and Prince's album Around the World in a Day .

Jonathan Melvoin died of a heroin overdose in New York at the age of 34 . The exact circumstances of death are unclear, however; Jimmy Chamberlin , then drummer for The Smashing Pumpkins , was present when Melvoin died. Chamberlin was the emergency allegedly instructed Melvoin under the shower to get. There he should reanimate him until the paramedics arrive. After Melvoin's death, Chamberlin was fired from the band. According to The Smashing Pumpkins, he and Melvoin used a variety of drugs.

At the time of his death, Melvoin was keyboardist for The Smashing Pumpkins, who were on a world tour on the occasion of their then current album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness . Melvoin's successor was Dennis Flemion (1955-2012) from the band The Frogs. Jonathan Melvoin gave his last concert with The Smashing Pumpkins at the Capital Center in Maryland .

The Smashing Pumpkins members were not invited to Melvoin's funeral. He left a woman with a child. Various songs are inspired by Melvoin's death, including Sarah McLachlan's hit single Angel , the song Jonathan by Wendy and Lisa (as Girls Bros.) and The Love We Make (1996) by Prince , which can be found on his album Emancipation .
