action

The young schoolteacher Ismael is forced to go out to sea, and so he decides to hire a whaler. In an inn in Nantucket , New England , he met Queequeg , the son of the South Seas chief and harpooner , who was tattooed all over his body , and a good friendship was established. Together they hire the old whaler “Pequod”. The first days on board are marked by hard work and rough customs, but Ishmael does not complain. It is unusual that the captain has not yet appeared on deck and that the ship has therefore only been commanded by the three helmsmen Starbuck, Stubb and Flask. In the evening, the crew tells stories about their captain, who is said to have lost his leg to a whale years ago.

Finally, Captain Ahab appears. A branched scar runs down his face and he has a prosthetic leg that was turned from a sperm whale bone. He explains that he wants the white whale called Moby Dick, who stole his leg if need be, and hunt around the world until he kills him. He manages to pull almost the entire crew away, only the first helmsman Starbuck is shocked by the old man's obvious madness. In fact, Ahab will stop at nothing to quench his thirst for revenge. He actually tracks down Moby Dick and chases him as far as Antarctica, where the ship threatens to break apart under the pressure of the pack ice, and even steers the Pequod through a heavy storm in order to confront his hated enemy.

He stubbornly fends off all attempts of fate to dissuade him from his plan. He does not listen to the advice to give up the hunt given by the captain of an English whaler who himself lost his arm to the white whale, and he refuses to assist another Nantucket captain in finding a missing boat on his Son in it.

Ultimately, the white whale shows up, and Ahab gets into the fishing boat himself to deal the fatal blow. With a terrible curse, he hurls the harpoon at the whale, but his leg has got tangled in the throwing line and is torn from the boat to his death. In a rage, the team pursued to avenge their captain, but they too could not beat the white giant.

After Moby Dick has smashed the fishing boats, he races towards the Pequod and rams it with his broad skull. If the ship was leaked, it sank, dragging the crew members who remained on board with it.

Only Ishmael survived. After three days at sea he is fished up by "Rachel", the whaler from Nantucket who was still desperately looking for the prodigal son.

Reviews

“The five-time Emmy-nominated two-parter thrives on Stewart's terrific performance. His Ahab is even more fascinating and repulsive than its predecessor Gregory Peck. Peck himself took on the role of preacher Mapple, played by Orson Welles in 1956. - Conclusion: A rousing remake of the classic. "
