Handbook of Theology and Popular Film

The Theology and Popular Film Handbook is a scientific work that has been published by Ferdinand Schöningh since 2007 . The ecumenical project examines religious motifs in Hollywood films.

The editors are Thomas Bohrmann (Professor of Catholic Theology at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich), Werner Veith (Chair of Christian Social Ethics at the University of Munich) and Stephan Zöller (Advisor at the Münchner Bildungswerk).

part 1

The 20 contributions are sorted by genre ( love film , science fiction film , horror film , war film , fantastic film ), characters (savior, angels, martyrs, devils, priests), directors ( Steven Spielberg , David Fincher , John Woo , Peter Weir , Wachowski siblings ) and topics (artificial intelligence, death, body, enlightenment, self-alienation). The appendix has a bibliography, a filmography and commented Internet addresses.

Volume 2

The 20 analyzes are sorted by genre ( western , comic adaptation , film musical , sports film , film comedy ), directors ( Stanley Kubrick , Ridley Scott , Guillermo del Toro , Luc Besson , Sam Raimi ), characters (king, child, reformer, superhero , Protestant pastor) and motives (family, guilt and atonement, apocalypse, resurrection, passion) sorted. The appendix contains a bibliography, a filmography, commented Internet addresses and registers of the cited films and directors for volumes 1 and 2.

Volume 3

The first part consists of six contributions that basically deal with the topic of religion in feature films . The second part describes the Protestant and Catholic film work in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in six essays. In the third part, ten popular films and series are analyzed: Avatar - Departure for Pandora , The Lord of the Rings , Star Wars , Jurassic Park , Shrek - The daredevil hero , The Da Vinci Code - The Da Vinci Code , The Chronicles of Narnia , Terminator , Star Trek and Kill Bill - Volume 1 . The appendix contains a bibliography, a filmography and a complete index of the cited films and directors for volumes 1, 2 and 3.
