Astrological symbol of Leo

The zodiac sign Leo ( Greek  λέων Léōn , Latin Leo ) corresponds to the fifth section of the zodiac from 120 ° to 150 ° ecliptical longitude from the vernal equinox .

On average, the sun is in this sign between July 24th and August 23rd . Due to the migration of the spring equinox , the zodiac sign Leo no longer corresponds to the constellation Leo . The sun in the constellation Leo is roughly between August 11th and September 17th.

After the Tetrabiblos by Claudius Ptolemy

  • the lion is male (I.12) and
  • the sun is ruler of the sign. (I.17)

As a Melothesian equivalent, the lion was assigned to the human body parts in the ancient iatroastrology, the abdomen, back and, of the organs, the heart . The assigned deity was Jupiter .

With Sagittarius and Aries the lion forms the trine of the element fire , and with Scorpio , Aquarius and Taurus the square of the four fixed signs.

The sign was already part of the Babylonian zodiac. It appears on the MUL.APIN boards as “lion” or “lioness” (MUL.UR.GU.LA ur.gu.la).

The sign has been represented as a (mostly lying) lion since ancient times, with the head on the left. The astrological symbol shows a stylized lion head as a circle with a mane indicated in the form of a curved line.

The Unicode character for the symbol is U + 264C (♌).
