Astrological symbol of Sagittarius

The zodiac sign Sagittarius ( Greek  τοξότης Toxótēs , Latin Sagittarius ) corresponds to the ninth section of the zodiac from 240 ° to 270 ° ecliptical longitude from the vernal equinox .

On average, the sun is in this sign between November 23rd and December 21st . Due to the migration of the spring equinox , the zodiac sign Sagittarius no longer corresponds to the constellation Sagittarius . The sun in the constellation Sagittarius is roughly between December 18th and January 20th.

After the Tetrabiblos by Claudius Ptolemy

  • the Sagittarius is male (I.12) and
  • the Jupiter is rulers of the character (I.17).

In ancient Iatroastrology, Sagittarius was assigned the thighs as a Melothesian equivalent . The assigned deity was Diana .

With Aries and Leo , Sagittarius forms the trine of the element fire , and with Pisces , Gemini and Virgo the square of the four common signs.

The sign was already part of the Babylonian zodiac. On the MUL.APIN boards it appears as the “shine of God” (PA.BIL.SAG).

The sign has been represented since ancient times as a hybrid being, mostly as a centaur . The human part holds a drawn bow and is about to shoot an arrow. Sometimes the hybrid is also a Triton . The astrological symbol shows a stylized bow on which an arrow lies.

The Unicode character for the symbol is U + 2650 (♐).
