Astrological symbol of Scorpio

The zodiac sign Scorpio ( Greek  Σκορπίος Skorpíos , Latin Scorpio ) corresponds to the eighth section of the zodiac from 210 ° to 240 ° ecliptical longitude from the vernal equinox .

The sun is located in this sign on average between October 24th and November 22nd. Due to the migration of the spring equinox , the zodiac sign Scorpio no longer corresponds to the constellation Scorpio . In the constellation of Scorpio, the sun is roughly between November 23 and 30.

After the Tetrabiblos by Claudius Ptolemy

  • the Scorpio is female (I.12) and
  • the Mars is rulers of the character (I.17).

In ancient Iatroastrology, the pubic region and genitals were assigned to the scorpion as a Melothesian equivalent . The assigned deity was Mars .

With Pisces and Cancer the Scorpio forms the trine of the element water , with Aquarius , Taurus and Leo the square of the four fixed signs.

The sign was already part of the Babylonian zodiac. It appears on the MUL.APIN boards as "Scorpio" (GIR.TAB).

The sign has been represented as a scorpion since ancient times. In northern countries in particular, there was sometimes considerable uncertainty about the appearance of a scorpion. The rendering is more reminiscent of a crab, sometimes a kind of dog with six or eight legs. But it can always be recognized by the sting.

The origin and interpretation of the astrological symbol are unclear. The resemblance to the symbol of the Virgin is striking . One possible explanation is that it is an old form of the letter "m", which is supposed to refer to the special medical meaning of the sign. A sting was added to differentiate the scorpion and a curved line to the virgin, which could symbolize an ear of corn.

The Unicode character for the symbol is U + 264F (♏).
