Astrological symbol of Libra

The signs of the zodiac scale ( Greek  ζυγὁς Zygos , latin Libra ) corresponds to the seventh portion of the zodiac of 180 ° to 210 ° ecliptical length from vernal equinox .

On average, the sun is in this sign between September 24th and October 23rd . Due to the migration of the spring equinox , the zodiac sign Libra no longer corresponds to the constellation Libra . In the constellation Libra, the sun is roughly between October 31 and November 23.

After the Tetrabiblos by Claudius Ptolemy

  • Libra is male (I.12) and
  • the Venus is ruler of the character (I.17), and
  • the Saturn is in Libra increased (I.19).

As a Melothesian equivalent, the scales were assigned to the body parts navel, loin and buttocks in ancient iatroastrology and, among the organs, the kidney. The assigned deity was Vulcanus .

With Aquarius and Gemini , Libra forms the trine of the element air and with Capricorn , Aries and Cancer the square of the four tropical or cardinal signs .

The zodiac was already part of the Babylonian - Assyrian MUL.APIN series Path of the Moon , which includes 18 astronomical constellations, there named "Libra" ( RIN ). The Greeks took over the sign of the scales with the Babylonian nickname "scissors [of the scorpion]" (χηλαι), only the Romans took over the scales from the Chaldeans .

Since ancient times the symbol has been represented as a simple scale with two scales connected by a balance beam. The astrological symbol may be of Egyptian origin, as the scales were referred to there in astrological texts with the word for horizon.

The Unicode character for the symbol is U + 264E (♎).
