Stephen Hough

Stephen Hough CBE (born November 22, 1961 in Heswall , Merseyside , England ) is an English pianist .

Life

After his victory at the Naumburg Piano Competition in 1983 , Hough initially concentrated on a rather out-of-the-way, tending to romantic repertoire. A recording of two piano concertos by Mozart's student Johann Nepomuk Hummel made him internationally known.

Hough made recordings by Mompou , Lowell Liebermann , Corigliano and George Tsontakis . His recordings of the romantic piano concertos by Emil von Sauer and Xaver Scharwenka , which won a Gramophone Award , as well as all works for piano and orchestra by Camille Saint-Saëns are also references .

Hough has a special love for Sergei Rachmaninoff . His style of interpretation is considered brilliant and fresh. He lives in the UK and the USA . Hough is openly gay . In 2005, Hough published The Bible as Prayer: a handbook for lectio divina .

In 2001 he was a MacArthur Fellow . In 2014 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
