Lowell Liebermann

Lowell Liebermann (born February 22, 1961 in New York City ) is an American composer , pianist and conductor .

Life

Liebermann was born in New York City in 1961 . Liebermann began to play the piano at the age of 8 and took composition lessons at the age of 14. Two years later he made his debut at the Carnegie Recital Hall as an interpreter of his Piano Sonata op. 1, which he himself composed at the age of 15 . He completed his music studies at the Juilliard School of Music with David Diamond and Vincent Persichetti with a master's degree and later a doctorate. Liebermann's numerous awards include a Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and prizes from the ASCAPand the BMI ( BMI Student Composer Awards ).

Liebermann currently lives in Weehawken , New Jersey with his partner, pianist and conductor William Hobbs .

Lowell Liebermann's catalog of works already lists over 100 compositions. In addition to two operas ( The Picture of Dorian Gray , 1996, and Miss Lonelyhearts , 2006) he wrote 3 symphonies (premiere of No. 2 with choir 2000; premiere of No. 3 on November 4, 2010 by JoAnn Falletta and the Virginia Symphony) as well as solo concerts (including 3 piano concertos and a flute concert premiered in 1992 by James Galway ). For chamber occupation so far u. a. 4 string quartets and a number of sonatas, as well as a large number of piano works.

Liebermann, who also works as a pianist and conductor, is one of the most frequently performed American composers today. CD recordings are available of a considerable part of his works, which are published by the Theodore Presser Company . Stephen Hough's interpretation of the 2nd piano concerto under Liebermann's direction was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1998 for best contemporary classical composition.

His piano work Gargoyles was performed by the Chinese-American pianists Yuja Wang and Shan-shan Sun or recorded on CD.
